Meet owner of Virginia is for Doulas, Tiffany Shank
Meet Tiffany Shank, owner of Virginia is for Doulas, Labor and Postpartum Doula and placenta specialist. As founder of Virginia is for Doulas, Tiffany proudly brings this agency to families in the Northern Virginia region. What is the best advice you ever received? I’ve had a lot of people tell me different things in different situations. I think the best advice I’ve ever received was from my Grammy to think positive, enjoy life, do what I love, be grateful and give thanks. Not easy when days are hard, but something I keep in mind regardless.
Describe your perfect sandwich. I’m supposed to avoid gluten, but if I could eat any sandwich that I’d describe as perfect, it would be a Roast beef with lettuce, tomato and mayo on an Italian sub. I used to get this sandwich from Primo Italiano in Reston Virginia.
Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate every time.
What is the last book you read? The last book I finished was The Birth Partner, though Im currently in the middle of several books right now.
What are your other interests outside of working as a doula? Gardening. I absolutely love to garden. Each year I plant a wide variety of vegetables in my raised beds. I also love to go on walks and hikes with my husband and daughter.
What is your favorite part about Virginia? Fall is my favorite part about Virginia. I live close enough to DC to experience the excitement there but far enough away to live surrounded by changing leaves and the Blue Ridge Mountains. In Virginia, fall is crisp, bright, and colorful. It is the perfect time to break out the hot chocolate.
What is your favorite part about being a mother? It is beyond fascinating to watch my daughter grow and teach her new things. She is so smart and helpful and such a little lady. Everyday she becomes more of her own person.
Why did you become a Doula? I became a Labor and Postpartum Doula to support women in their journey through parenthood. It is such an emotional, important time with so many decisions, choices and opinions surrounding you. I knew I wanted to be a doula to provide support, resources, a calming presence and a friendly face to women during birth and postpartum recovery. I experienced the true importance of it when I gave birth myself. Even as a Doula, giving birth to my first daughter I greatly benefited from labor and postpartum doula support. My birth and postpartum period did not go as planned and with out the support of my husband and doulas I would not have slept or ate well or had a clean dish to eat off of. That is why I became a Doula and that is why I continue to do the work that I do.
